Excellent Diggah - I see you are the "one with the rifle" - you chose the expensive option! You could've been the one behind, waiting to pick it up!

Looking good
Except for the beard....only if you're a veteran from the revolutionary war. ![]()
And you'd need a nice medal on your chest, maybe a guard badge?
I'm only waiting for the proper Sapogi to complete my uniform.

Would they wear medals into battle? I was also amused that there seems to be no unit identification on soviet uniforms. Must have been very confusing.
No longer involved in airsoft.
There are some arm patches for some branches, and sometimes you see unit numbers on shoulderboards or even on the canvas carrier for the canteen.
On the early M35 uniform you also see unit numbers on the collar tabs
As for medals, there are quite a few pictures of especially NCOs en COs wearing their medals and badges proudly into battle. Also of enlisted men wearing the 'excellent gunner/driver/grenadier' or Guard badge at all times.
....I have sincere doubts if "Excellent Tractor Driver" was a good one for picking up a lonely padroga ![]()

Inicidentally anyone know what insignia was worn on thewse, i'm pretty sure it was just the late war tactical rank bars in green on black.
Elbel weise and green/ Black rank were the only rank "supposed" to be on any Heer Camo gear. but The splinter M43 cap has an eagle/cockade, the splinter panzer rap has loops for normal shoulder boards, so i think its what your units standing orders were.

We need to understand that these items are field/private made items, not issue. You dont need any insignia on a camo cap, you can put insignia on camo kit. The stuff is rare anyway, hard to be too specific.

It cost me a pretty penny, but I've bought a Kodak Medalist camera, and 5 empty 620 film spools.
The camera has a 1941-dated lens and bristles with all kinds of features I'll probably never use.

I believe it was mostely used by the US Navy, but also by civilian WARCOs as personal cameras. A lucky few British army photographers got Medalists as well. The Medalist carries the nickname "The Tank" because it's body is cut from solid aluminium, making it quite heavy and robust. The Ektar Lens is also one of the sharpest of the period.
Can't wait to give it a try. I will need to respool some 120 film to the 620 spools to do it though. Finally a reason to use that change-bag I've had lying around.

This was waiting for me yesterday when I got home:
Keystone Model A7 filmcamera (a model from 1937)

It needs a bit of a clean, but it purrs very nicely. Now to find out how much Kodak 16mm film costs and what it costs to develope.
There also was a very blackened coffee can in the box, that after an hour of scrubbing looked like a very nice vintage, blue, enameled coffee can

Since the weekend:
- extra 37 pat skeleton water bottle cover
- extra revolver lanyard
- Signals bag with period headset, for conversion for use with modern radios. Don't have a microphone though ![]()
- MkV RAC Helmet for lookslike use as an airborne helmet.
- Hallamshire Battalion insignia
Just received a ww2-dated 75mm shell casing, nothing special in itself. You see a lot of shells around here in the houses of people who lived through the occupation. They tend to use them as a vase or an umbrella stand or just decoration. This one was slightly different as it was ingraved.
the inscription translates into:
"In memory of the liberation of Waalwijk on Monday 30th of October 1944"
Waalwijk happens to be my home town.
My parents have a bell hanging in the hallway made from an 88mm shell casing with the same kind of decoration.
Anyway, it'll make a nice display piece to decorate my new house when it's finished in 2008 ![]()

Latest acquisition has been one of my cheapest, but probably the best thing i've bought:
"Soldat: Volume XIC" from Cyrus Lee. I'd call it the "how to guide" for Heer, SS and Fallschirmjager loadouts. Comes with shitloads of pics, excellent descriptions of kit & clothing - not to mention a sizeable section on training and tactics.
